How the Glycemic Load Is Calculated

The glycemic load (GL) is a more practical number than the glycemic index (GI) alone because it accounts for how much carbohydrate you actually eat. The formula is simple:

GL = (GI × available carbohydrate in grams) ÷ 100

For example, if a syrup has a GI of 50 and your serving contains 20 g of available carbohydrate, the GL is (50 × 20) ÷ 100 = 10. The GI describes how quickly a carbohydrate raises blood sugar relative to pure glucose, but it is measured on a fixed 50 g carbohydrate portion. Frequently Asked Questions

Is a lower glycemic index always better for syrups?
