The Math Behind Glycemic Load

Glycemic load is a more practical measure than glycemic index alone because it accounts for the actual amount of carbohydrate in a serving. The formula is:

GL = (GI × available carbohydrates per serving) / 100

Available carbohydrates, sometimes called net carbs, are total carbohydrates minus fiber. Fiber is excluded because it is not digested into glucose in the same way as starch and sugars.
