How the Calculation Works
The calculator is built around the Adequate Intakes for total water published by the U.S. National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine: about 3.7 L per day for adult men and 2.7 L per day for adult women. These values cover water from all beverages, plain drinking water, and moisture in food. The calculator scales this reference to your body weight, assuming a reference adult weight of 70 kg.
After the weight-adjusted base is set, each factor is applied as a multiplier:
Climate adjustment = base × (climate factor − 1)
Activity adjustment = base × climate factor × (activity factor − 1)
Sweat adjustment = base × climate factor × activity factor × (sweat factor − 1)
The climate factor is 1.0 in cool weather, 1.1 when warm, 1.15 at high altitude, 1.25 in hot dry conditions, and 1.3 in hot humid heat. Hot humid environments reduce the efficiency of sweat evaporation, so the body loses more liquid staying cool. The activity factor ranges from 1.0 for sedentary lifestyles to 1.25 for physically demanding days. The sweat tendency selector adjusts by ±5% or +15% because sweat rates vary widely between individuals.
Exercise is added separately at 10 ml per minute of moderate to vigorous exercise. That is intentionally a rounded estimate: real sweat losses during exercise range from about 0.5 L to 2 L per hour depending on intensity, clothing, weather, and fitness. Treat the result as a starting point, not a prescription.

Example 1 — Hot and humid training day. A 70 kg man in a hot humid climate who is moderately active, has normal sweat tendency, and runs for 45 minutes:
