How the Calories Are Calculated

This tool uses the standard MET (metabolic equivalent) method, the same approach found in fitness references and research studies. A MET value tells you how many times more energy an activity uses compared with resting. Sitting quietly is about 1 MET. Walking at an easy 2.8 mph uses roughly 3.5 METs, so you burn about three and a half times more energy per hour than you would sitting still. A brisk 3.8 mph walk rises to around 5.0 METs.

Calories burned = MET value × body weight (kg) × time (hours)

To apply the formula, the calculator first works out the distance you walked. It converts steps to distance using stride length, estimated from height with the common adult shorthand stride = height × 0.413. Worked Examples

At 2.8 mph (about 4.51 km/h), the walk takes roughly 0.78 hours. Calories = 3.5 MET × 70 kg × 0.78 h ≈ 191 kcal.

Example 2: A 60 kg walker takes 10,000 steps at a brisk 3.8 mph pace. Height is 165 cm, so stride = 165 × 0.413 = 68.1 cm (0.681 m). Distance = 10,000 × 0.681 = 6.81 km. At 3.8 mph (6.12 km/h), the time is about 1.11 hours. Calories = 5.0 MET × 60 kg × 1.11 h ≈ 333 kcal.

Notice that the second example burns far more energy even though the walker is lighter — pace and duration matter as much as body weight.
