How the Fat Burn Estimate Is Calculated

This calculator uses the metabolic equivalent of task (MET) method, which is the standard way exercise scientists compare the energy cost of different activities. One MET equals the energy your body uses while sitting quietly at rest, roughly 1 kcal per kilogram of body weight per hour. An activity rated at 3 METs therefore requires about three times your resting energy expenditure. The base formula is:

Calories burned = MET × body weight (kg) × time (hours)
Fat calories = total calories × fat oxidation factor
Fat grams = fat calories ÷ 9

After calculating total calories, the fat-burned portion is estimated with an intensity-specific fat oxidation factor. Your body always uses a mix of fat and carbohydrate for fuel. At lower intensities, fat contributes a larger share; at higher intensities, carbohydrate takes over as the dominant fuel. For light play this calculator assumes 60% of burned energy comes from fat, for moderate play 45%, and for vigorous play 30%. Once fat calories are known, dividing by 9 converts them to grams, since one gram of fat provides about 9 kcal.

Worked Examples

Example 1 — Moderate frisbee: A 65 kg person plays frisbee for 30 minutes at MET 4.5. Total calories = 4.5 × 65 × 0.5 = 146 kcal. Fat calories = 146 × 0.45 = 66 kcal. Fat burned = 66 ÷ 9 = 7.3 g.

Example 2 — Vigorous tag: An 80 kg person plays tag for 45 minutes at MET 6.0. Total calories = 6 × 80 × 0.75 = 360 kcal. Fat calories = 360 × 0.30 = 108 kcal. Fat burned = 108 ÷ 9 = 12 g.

Example 3 — Light catch: A 60 kg person plays catch for 20 minutes at MET 3.0. Total calories = 3 × 60 × 0.333 = 60 kcal. Fat calories = 60 × 0.60 = 36 kcal. Fat burned = 36 ÷ 9 = 4 g.

Notice that the vigorous example burns more total calories and more fat grams than the light example, even though its fat percentage is lower. That is why both total burn and fat percentage matter.

Why Intensity Changes the Fat-Burning Percentage

During easy activity, your muscles have plenty of oxygen and time to break down fatty acids for energy. Slow-twitch muscle fibers are efficient at using fat, and the body prefers to spare carbohydrate for harder efforts. As you speed up or add sudden bursts of chasing and jumping, the energy demand rises faster than fat can be mobilized. Carbohydrate, stored as muscle and liver glycogen, can be converted to energy more quickly, so it becomes the primary fuel.

This explains why light play can have a higher percentage of fat calories but a lower total calorie burn. If your goal is to maximize the percentage of energy from fat, longer light-to-moderate sessions are useful. If your goal is maximum total calorie expenditure, vigorous play will usually win. Limitations and Accuracy Notes

Every estimate is a model, not a measurement. The MET values are population averages, so your actual calorie burn can be higher or lower depending on body composition, fitness level, how smoothly you move, temperature, and the surface you play on. The fat oxidation factors are also approximations; the true percentage depends on fitness training status, recent meals, and how long you have been active.

The result represents gross energy expenditure during play, not net fat loss.
