Fluid ounces are first converted to millilitres using the US conversion factor 1 fl oz = 29.5735 ml. The daily-value percentage uses the FDA reference amount for total carbohydrate, 275 g per day, so a 12 g per 100g shake provides about 4.4% of the daily reference. Worked Examples
Example 1: Chocolate shake in fluid ounces. A 16 fl oz chocolate milkshake has 67 g of total carbs. The calculator converts 16 fl oz to 473.2 ml, then multiplies by the regular density 1.06 g/ml to get 501.6 g. Carbs per 100g = 67 ÷ 501.6 × 100 = 13.4 g.
Example 2: Homemade shake in millilitres. You blend a 350 ml shake that has 45 g carbs. With a thick-style density of 1.12 g/ml, the serving weighs 392 g. Carbs per 100g = 45 ÷ 392 × 100 = 11.5 g. The calculator also returns 12.9 g per 100 ml because the same 45 g is dissolved in 350 ml.
Example 3: Label in grams. A bottled shake lists 500 g and 61 g carbs. Enter 61 g and serving size 500 g. Result = 61 ÷ 500 × 100 = 12.2 g per 100g, no density needed.
Factors Affecting Accuracy
Density is the largest source of error. The calculator uses these default densities: regular 1.06 g/ml, thick 1.12 g/ml, thin 0.95 g/ml, and light 0.90 g/ml. Real shakes vary with ice cream overrun (the amount of air beaten in), temperature, and how much whipped cream is on top. A shake served with a lot of air could have a density closer to 0.9, while a hand-packed malted shake can approach 1.15. If you know the actual density, enter it. Also note that the calculator uses US fluid ounces; UK imperial fluid ounces are about 28.41 ml, not 29.57 ml.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is carbs per 100g the same as carbs per 100ml? No. The two values are equal only if the shake density is exactly 1.0 g/ml. Most shakes are denser than water, so 100 ml weighs more than 100 g and will appear to have fewer carbs per 100 ml than per 100g. This is why the calculator shows both values.
Should I count sugar separately? The total carbohydrate value already includes added and naturally occurring sugars. For general macronutrient tracking, use total carbs. If you are practicing net-carb counting, subtract fiber and sugar alcohols from total carbs, but milkshakes usually contain very little fiber.
Can I use this for protein shakes or smoothies? The math works the same for any pourable drink if you use an appropriate density. For protein shakes made mostly with water or milk, the density is often close to 1.02–1.06 g/ml. The calculation method remains identical.
