Why Wine Is Essentially Fat-Free

Grapes contain only trace amounts of fat, and winemaking does not add fat. Fermentation converts grape sugars into ethanol; the finished wine is a water-ethanol solution with acids, polyphenols, minerals and residual sugar. The USDA FoodData Central database lists total fat for red, white and rosé table wines as 0.00 g per 100 g. Sparkling wines are equally fat-free.

When a US label says 0 g, it legally means less than 0.5 g per serving. For a 150 ml glass, even that upper bound converts to less than 0.34 g per 100 g. Products with meaningful fat are not plain wine; they are cream liqueurs, dairy-based wine coolers or cocktails that add butter.

The Calculation Method

Nutrition labels state fat per serving. To convert to per 100 g, first convert the serving volume into grams using density, then apply the ratio:

Serving weight (g) = volume (ml) × density (g/ml)
Fat per 100 g = (fat per serving ÷ serving weight) × 100

For example, 150 ml of table wine at 0.997 g/ml weighs 149.55 g. If a label listed 0.3 g per serving, fat per 100 g would be (0.3 ÷ 149.55) × 100 = 0.20 g. The calculator also reports fat per 100 ml because some European labels prefer volume-based reference.

Example 1 — Standard dry red. Label: 0 g fat per 150 ml. One glass, density 0.997. Serving weight = 149.55 g. Fat per 100 g = (0 ÷ 149.55) × 100 = 0.00 g. Total fat = 0.00 g.

Example 2 — Dessert wine with a trace. Label: 0.4 g fat per 100 ml. Density 1.030. Serving weight = 103.0 g. Fat per 100 g = (0.4 ÷ 103.0) × 100 = 0.39 g. Two small glasses = 0.8 g total fat.

Does wine contain fat? No. Plain wine is essentially fat-free; the USDA database reports 0.00 g per 100 g for most styles.

Why does wine have calories if it has no fat? Alcohol supplies about 7 kcal per gram and residual sugar about 4 kcal per gram. The calories in dry wine come mostly from ethanol, not fat.

How accurate is the density value? Within about ±2%, which is irrelevant when fat is zero. For trace fat values, the difference shifts the second decimal only slightly.
