How It Works: Formula Explained
All estimates are based on a simple proportional formula:
Iron (mg) = serving weight (g) × iron density (mg per 100 g) ÷ 100
If you enter ounces, the calculator first converts to grams using 1 oz = 28.3495 g. If you enter a shrimp count, it multiplies by an assumed 8 g per medium shrimp — a reasonable average for medium (41–50 per pound) peeled, cooked shrimp. Larger shrimp weigh more, so use grams or ounces for higher accuracy.
The iron densities come from published nutrition databases. Cooking changes iron density because water leaves the shrimp, concentrating nutrients by weight. Raw shrimp has more water, so a raw 100 g portion has fewer dry solids; cooked shrimp is denser in iron per 100 g. This is why the calculator separates raw from cooked forms.
Worked Examples
Example 1: Standard 3 oz cooked serving
3 oz = 85.05 g. Cooked shrimp density = 2.22 mg/100g. Iron = 85.05 × 2.22 / 100 = 1.89 mg. Against the 18 mg DV, this is 10.5% — a good source by FDA definitions.
Example 2: 150 g grilled shrimp bowl

Use cooked weight if you cook at home. Nutrition labels generally refer to prepared, edible portions. Weigh shrimp after cooking for the most accurate cooked-density calculation.
Don't confuse raw and cooked weights. A raw 100 g shrimp will shrink to roughly 75–80 g when cooked. If you weigh raw, the iron density for raw is the appropriate multiplier; if you weigh cooked, use the cooked density. Mixing them overestimates iron by up to 4×.
